Carolina Bonilla, MD is a Board Certified Adult and Geriatric Psychiatrist. She completed a 4-year residency in Psychiatry at the University
of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, where she had the honor of being nominated by her attending physicians for the Resident Humanism
and Excellence in Teaching Award in 2004. She was also elected by her peers as Assistant Chief Resident in 2006 and graduated in 2007.
Very early in her residency she learned her love for Geriatrics and Neuropsychiatry. She spent additional time in those areas compared to her
fellow residents, gaining a lot of experience in geriatric psychiatry. She then completed a 1-year Fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry at
University of Pittsburgh Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic and gained additional expertise in management of the different types of
dementia, late onset depression, grief, and other problems that sometimes arise in the golden years. Dr. Bonilla’s fellowship Included training
in Interpersonal Therapy, a particular type of psychotherapy that fits very well to people who are grieving and those suffering times of transition.
After completing her fellowship in 2008, Dr. Bonilla began working at Sutter Center for Psychiatry in Sacramento treating adults and older adults who needed to be hospitalized. She works hard to provide the best care possible to her patients, believing that a multidisciplinary team is the best approach to help a person and she is eager to integrate all aspects of a patient’s life into the treatment plan to achieve maximum success. Her contributions to the hospital and her patients were recognized with the James Margolis Award of Excellence in Clinical Practice in 2010.
