1. What insurance does Community Psychiatry accept?

Our offices are contracted with Aetna, APS Healthcare Bethesda, Inc, Anthem Blue Cross, Magellan, Managed Health Network (MHN), PacifiCare, United Behavioral Health (UBH), and U.S. Behavioral Healthcare (USBH). Many managed health companies, such as Blue Shield and HealthNet, carve out the mental health portion of their care to these companies, so it is very likely our office can see you. If for any reason we can’t, we’ll find a provider who can.

2. What is the difference between Therapy and Psychiatry?

Therapy, also called psychotherapy, is a method of treating mental and mood disorders. Psychotherapists use a range of techniques to create communication and behavioral change. These changes are designed to improve the mental health of a client. Psychologists, therapists, social workers, and counselors practice psychotherapy.

Psychiatry is also a method of treating mental and mood disorders. Psychiatrists often practice psychotherapy, but they are also doctors—that is, they have earned a medical degree. This expertise allows the psychiatrist to more profoundly understand the medical scope of a patient’s trouble and prescribe medication if he or she thinks it is an appropriate treatment.

3. Do Community Psychiatry Doctors always prescribe medication?

No, our doctors do not always prescribe medication. The doctor will see a patient for an initial evaluation, after which he or she will recommend medication treatment only if the doctor believes it is appropriate. If the doctor believes that no medication is needed, he or she will refer the patient to a psychotherapist who will provide appropriate care without the use of prescription medicine.

4. Does Community Psychiatry complete disability paperwork?

Some doctors will recommend short term disability after the patient has been evaluated over the course of a few sessions. Our doctors do not work on cases involving long term disability and they will not see clients who only seek completion of their disability paperwork.

5. Does Community Psychiatry take Worker’s Compensation cases?

No. You should contact your insurance company to receive an appropriate referral for worker’s compensation cases.
