Amita Upadhyay, M.D. Female
Amita Upadhyay, M.D. is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She is board certified in Adult, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Upadhyay obtained her medical degree from Kasturba Medical College in India. Upon graduation from medical school, she moved to the United States to pursue further education. She attended the School of Public Health at the Ohio State University School of Medicine and Public Health. She graduated with a Master’s in Public Health majoring in the fields of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. She completed various research projects at the Ohio Department of Health and Columbus Children’s Hospital. Having moved from India and given her background in public health, she is familiar with various cultures and remains very interested in issues pertaining to minorities, women and prevention. Given her interest in prevention and early intervention of mental illness, Dr. Upadhyay went on to pursue a residency in Adult Psychiatry at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington DC where she was their chief resident. During her residency training, Dr. Upadhyay worked on several research projects at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland. After graduating from the residency program, she completed her fellowship training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Millard Fillmore Hospital, State University of New York at Buffalo. Prior to working as an outpatient psychiatrist at Community Psychiatry, Dr. Upadhyay worked as an inpatient Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at a residential treatment facility in Western New York. She is an active member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Dr. Upadhyay utilizes a biopsychosocial framework during the assessment and treatment of her patients. Being a parent of two children, she understands the process a family may go through when they bring their child to see a child psychiatrist. She enjoys working with both children and adolescents. She realizes the importance of focusing on her patient as a whole. While implementing a treatment team approach, she likes to collaborate with primary care physicians, psychotherapists, and schools and is comprehensive in her approach. She has expertise in the evaluation and treatment of anxiety and mood disorders, and ADHD. Even though the majority of her role revolves around psychiatric medication management, she tends to be conservative in her approach. Dr. Upadhyay is a very compassionate and caring physician who seeks to establish a therapeutic relationship with her patients.
In her spare time, Dr. Upadhyay enjoys reading, walking, watching cooking shows and spending time with her family. Having being mentored during her career, she realizes the importance of mentorship. She likes to coach and volunteer at her children’s schools. She believes that humans are resilient by nature and finds meditation to be a very helpful tool.
