atry. Upon graduating in 1967, he entered the Air Force Flight Surgeon program and did his internship at Travis AFB. He served in Taiwan as the Base Medical Director. Dr. Mawhinney completed his Community and General Psychiatry residency in San Mateo County at Chope Hospital and his Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Coming to San Diego in 1975, he was Chief of the Children’s Inpatient Services for San Diego County Department of Mental Health for three years. During those years, he consulted with the Probation Department, Juvenile Court and the Department of Social Services.
He has been in private practice since 1979. During his career, Dr. Mawhiney has been involved with many community-based programs, including residential and day treatment programs. He has extensive experience with hospital treatment. Most recently he has worked with two eating disorders programs in San Diego and done research on methamphetamine addiction with a UCLA/NIDA project.
As an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at UCSD, he has supervised residents in the General Psychiatry and Child Psychiatry programs.

San Diego Society for Adolescent Psychiatry
Currently, he is serving on the American Psychiatric Association Assembly Executive Committee.
