About Mindfulness

The Mindfulness program teaches tools for reducing symptoms of depression, anxiety, pain and chronic illness. By utilizing a combination of meditation and cognitive behavioral therapy, participants in the program learn to change old distressing patterns of thinking and feeling in order to live more fully in the present. Developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn Ph.D. in 1979 at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, this program has now helped thousands of people in over 200 medical centers in the US and Europe.

It is natural to have an emotional reaction to physical pain. Often this reaction takes the form of worry, anticipation, anger, hopelessness, helplessness or even panic. About 50% of people with chronic pain suffer from depression and anxiety. The stress and tension from such negative reactions can lead to increased pain symptoms and even inflammation. This reaction also lessens our ability to make clear decisions which may have a negative impact on relationships, work, and other things we care about. The resulting problems in our lives tend to produce even more stress and the cycle continues. Mindfulness meditation teaches skills to help free us from this pain cycle.
