David Finkelstein, M.D.

David Finkelstein, M.D. is a board-certified adult psychiatrist, whose primary interest is in psychotherapy. He typically sees patients for weekly psychotherapy sessions. If appropriate, he also prescribes psychiatric medications to his patients, though his primary approach to addressing issues is therapy. Dr. Finkelstein usually utilizes a psychodynamic, or insight-oriented, approach to try to help people figure out how possible unconscious factors from past experiences might be contributing to current life troubles or maladaptive patterns.  Although therapists who practice psychoanalytic-based therapies are often stereotyped as being silent and expressionless, Dr. Finkelstein tries to create a warm and engaging environment and frequently uses humor.

Dr. Finkelstein completed his undergraduate studies at Williams College in Williamstown, MA, majoring in Biology, though grateful to have been the recipient of a strong liberal arts education. He attended medical school at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, MA, and he continued at UMass Medical for his psychiatric residency training. He participated in the Advanced Training Program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. He moved to California and joined Community Psychiatry in 2013.

If you think you might be interested in seeing Dr. Finkelstein for psychotherapy, you can contact him directly to set up a time to talk to see if his practice might be a good fit for you:
